Once, eating with his friend, Father Hasegawa declined his host’s offer of a bowl of rice; he was full. But then delicious pickles appeared, which caused a Japanese palate to cry out for rice, and he decide to have a bowl after all. Father Takakura was outraged (i.e. , in his guest’s view, German ): how could he eat rice plus pickle when he had been too full to eat rice alone?p.114

The Inuit would put a small piece of feather over the hole and stand with bone harpoon ready and when the seal came into the hole the air pushing ahead of its body would ruffle the feather and the hunter would lunge with the harpoon and bury the barber head in the seal.

Q: why do three different verb forms in this passage occur with “would”? What does the use of “would” convey here?

OA: This sentence has one dependent clause with “they” as the subject and “called” as the verb. So it’s a fragment.

RA: “A coyote, perhaps, brush wolf as they called them up north” is the only clause in this sentence with “they called” as the subject verb combination. So with only one dependent clause we can conclude that this sentence is a fragment-complex sentence.

Q: According to the story, what is a “grapnel,” and how does it work exactly?

OA: A “grapnel” is a more bigger peace than a bow. It releases the arrow very fast so it’s hard to miss your target. This is what David used to hunt with.

RA: A grapnel is a small anchor with four inches rounded point. In the book Brian would drop the hook and let it bite into the weeds and mud on the bottom and tie it off to the bow of the canoe to hold on to it.

Student #2 here used a beautiful simple sentence. One subject verb combination (there – are) , one clause making complete sense, a simple sentence.

This sentence has two subject verb combinations (we-want) where both make sense alone. Nice example of a compound sentence.

Simple

This sentence only has one subject and verb combination, makes completely sense by itself , consequently it is a simple sentence

Compound
The salt in the wood makes it slow to burn and it was difficult to light. P.6
This clause has two subject and verb combinations separated by the conjunction “and” and which makes sense individually: two simple sentences

Complex
When I was about fourteen, I made one wild attempt at sailing. P.8
The first sentence starts with subordination conjunction “when” making the first sentence a subordinated clause while the second sentence is a complete simple sentence.

Compound complex
Then I began to read about the sea and found that the Pacific Ocean was so enormous it dominated the entire planet; all the land mass in the world could fit inside the Pacific and there would still be sea around it. P. 10
This clause is collection of two independent clauses and two dependent clauses that make it a compound complex sentence.

I went away from there a new person, and I also began to understand things about mself, that I must see and know the oceans. I ust go to the sea, as the writers Herman Melville and Richard Henry Dana, Jr. , and Ernest K. Gannand Sterling Hayden had done. Like them, I must seek myself there, as the novelist James Jones did as he was writing Go to the Window-Marker.
To do that, I would need a boat.

This passage is very important because this where he realizes that he need to get away to the sea and see and do those amazing things other writers like him did. This passage is where the whole story starts. He is self consious that he had to go seek hiself and understand what he will find.
